Our first year of operation has surpassed our expectations, we have exceeded 9,000 checkouts in 11 months. Our initial goal was around 300 check outs a month, maybe 400 if we were super busy. However, we are averaging just over 800 check outs a month. Because of this we are hoping to automate the circulation system of RedLou. Currently, we use paper and pencil. After a busy stop it takes 1-2 hours to enter everything into the system after we leave the stop. By automating the system, RedLou will be free to make additional stops throughout the area. Patrons will be able to view what items they have checked out and place items on hold much more easily. We will need a computer, scanners, receipt printers, barcode labels and protectors, and a subscription to a library cataloging system. The cost will be around $8,000 and lots of volunteer hours converting to an automated system.
